Im a newbie to crawling so take it easy on me.
I just got an AX10 the other day and looking for some ideas to make it a comp 2.2 ready rig. What can be done to make it handle and drive better for a newbie? It has a 4 link tcs plates front and rear, carbon battery plates on front axle with 2oz of lead on each plate, 2s Lipo, 55t, weighted Berg wheels with Losi Rock Claws w/ memory foam, rear steer kit installed but coming off, straight links on front, bent links on rear, Traxxas XL10 esc for now, Novak RX and JR XS3 Pro Tx. I have a Xtreme carbon chassis but now installed.
So what should I look into next? Maybe a Novak Goat system, DX3R radio and receiver?:confused::confused::confused:

The radio and the ESC to me was the most important upgrade that I did @ first. I would get a Tekin FXR ESC or maybe a sidewinder, the DX3r is a VERY good radio and you shouldnt ever need another one for ground RC's. I would get those two things and drive the crap out of it and as your skill grows you can upgrade what you need...

I think that Brushed is the way to go, it gives you a little more smooth control.
Also, in the forsale section, there is a used (almost new) DX3R for sale.... That would be a great buy!
The biggest thing with the AX10, is ground clearance... you want to get it up in the air if you can, without raising your center of gravity as much as possible. If you can keep your COG as low and obtain a good 3 inch clearance at the skid, you will have a very capable rig...but its not easy doing that!

It didnt have a battery plate when I got it so I made lexan plates for the upper bars and the receiver is mounted on the rear bars. I did use a piece of lexan where the stock battery plate goes but only using a 1800 2s lipo so the weight saivings is there. The lexan Im using is a dirt oval side wing that had laying around so its pretty thin but should be strong enough to handle it. The ESC I mounted under the home made battery mount in front of the tranny. I was thinking of making a aluminum servo mount and brake it upwards to mount the Lipo behind the servo to keep that weight centered near the axle. Im gonna keep the axle plates where they are and use automotoive stick-on wheel weights on them so I can adjust if I need to.

I would have to say check into the SideWinder esc or maybe for just a few dollars more a Mamba Maxx esc. Both esc's are very programmable, more so than most other's.
Stick with the smoother "brushed" motors at this time. Maybe consider going with a 35T or 45T motor. How do you like your "wheelspeed" now?
Something that you can work on for almost free is your shock setup & the foams in your tires. Both are pretty important.
What steering servo(s) are you using?
And to take a little bit from both Silas and Element:
Always be aware of and trying to keep your COG as low as possible
And drive it, drive it, drive it, as much as you can. If possible, find better drivers to practice with.
DX3R is a smart choice and there is one for sale in the classifieds. ;)

I will second the ESC is the most imprtant thing. After driving a crawler for 3 months with the stock ESC and then going to a good ESC it made a word of difference! And then like ELEMENT said . . . drive the crap out of it. Your rig will be different than most other people's only only through experience are you going to be able to tell specifically what your rig will need. Plus driving something not totally pimped out will make you appreiciate the upgrades much much more:thumb: it did for me!

I played around today with some internal spring set-ups over and under the piston. In full droop I just didnt like the low ground clearance so so I switched to the spring over the piston but I think I need some more springs with different rates. The chassis now sits crooked to the right and has tons of torque twist. What weight oil should I start with? I was using some 30w today.
I may get some different springs and go back to the outer spring set up like it was before.
I you can post some pics and descriptions of your set ups please

contact Nut Buster if you can. he had a heck of a setup earlier this summer that had minimal or no torque twist at all. if i remember right he was running red traxxas t-maxx external springs.
