I had some HR axles sitting in the shop and some ideas. I made a low CG Servo mount, added Berg top 4link mounts.

I designed a chassis today that looks good and works better then anything I have ever run before. This is the first crawler that I have had that handles better then Tuber I used to qualify for 2007 nats, since then nothing has felt near this good. With Losi Claws, and no dig, i was able to get up ledges that I was not able to do with Panthers on my Berg Builds.

This chassis is an absolute home run, I will have to make a couple of these to sell, it will work with Bergs and Hot Racing axles.

I will post a picture tomorrow, the truck is bent right now because I stripped a ball end trying to clear a gap.

Parts so far

- HS5995 TG Servo (not the HS5955)
- RC Innovations Delrin Chassis
- Low CG Servo mount
- ST Racing bent Links
- RC4wd Beadlocks
- Proline Mem foams
- Losi Claws
- CC BEC
- CC Mamba Max
- Lathe motors
- Berg gears and spool
- 11.1 V 1500 MAH Lipo
- DX-3r

It will have dig, I am waiting for a package from Holmes for HD dig switches. I will activate them with a HS81.

I think that it is safe to say that Rene went into an 'I do not give a SH!T about RC funk' after nationals. I spent quality time with the wife and worked on my 1:1, mountain biked and did some other stuff.

Hey there the rear axle is the same as I had at the last comp, I just put different wheels on it for testing. (I sold Berg Axles, the DNA Snipers I had and am selling the Stalkers)

My Shafty may get close to 88 mph, I am sure it will be entertaining. (scale speed LOL)

I am switching to a Castle Creations 1/10th Side Winder, it might be easier to pit on the back axle, or maybe it even fits up front somewhere. And it is 8.5 grams lighter.

I am thrilled that the club is getting stronger. I really hope this continues. I think the results achieved in Va are just great, but Va is just a newer club, they will improve too.

I would love for the North Carolina Boys to travel to big events like the East Coast Championship and take a bunch of the top 10 spots. It would be great if we can turn into a force like the SERCRC is. I think we are on our way to get this done.

The geometry is the same changes are;
- Shock mount braces are stronger
- Entire chassis is beefier
- Legal size body panels are a direct fit
- Cab is higher with rolled fastback, will make it easier to get it off it roof

I took the time to detail my part drawing (add material type, density, etc..) and used the mass function and found the last drawing to be too heavy.

I am going to try to break my tester today so I can find the weakest spot. Then this design is going on a diet. It should be able to reduce the amount of material by 40% without adding machining time, nor effecting strength.

And the good thing is, I can do that while I am in hotel in Ohio (then Memphis) next week.

The curved top was initially not used, because I do not like the way it looks, however, it is too hard to get the bodypanels to fit well the way I had the design before.

Seeing Elements curved roof (on one of his prototypes) made me decide to give it a try again.

Hey Tom

I know you prefer edges and corners, but the smooth curves are there for function. Plus it is also way easier to fit body panels when you do not have to make sure that two creases are an exact distance appart (I know you can make a jig, but who has time for that).

I am very please with how this truck drives and I am equally proud of how it looks. I am also thrilled that it is a completely unique way of using delrin to build a chassis.

I was able to do some testing at the GA event that showed me that my squat/anti-squat angles are good if not great. But I am running a fairly low powerred rig. I am entertaining the idea of running some faster motors, just to be able to do a couple fancier tricks. This may cause the geometry of this rig to not work as well.

I will redesign the lower and upper sides slightly in the next couple days to give 3 or more mounting positions for the top links, also the top link mounts will not share the mounting hole for the side panel.

renoirbud
12-22-2008, 10:54 AM
Lucky just got adjustable;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v243/renoirbud/v5adjustable.jpg

- Lower links are fixed
- uper links can be moved to 4 different locations in the front and 5 in the back, making 20 different squat angles possible
- shock mounts can be raised and lowered by droping down chassis center in 4 different heights and can be moved backwards and forward in 5 position so 20 different possible shock mounting positions

The mass is basically the same and lateral stiffness is increased.

I am breaking axles everytime I run, and I think the issues is that my servo can turn the wheels too far and they get bound up.

I am going to tap and drill some hard stops into the steering system to prevent this.

I loved the functionality of the new servo plate I had today and that it protected the servo from breaking off the mounts when the truck was up side down. If I have time I am making a mount the goes behind the axle so that the tie rod can be brought closser to the servo for more power. I obviously have more then enough throw.

Silas

This truck has Berg axles now and I put in the Cobalts, wow. The power is insane, they are way faster then my 45 t lathe motors and the start up is good. They stayed totally cool through two packs (1320 Mah 2 cell), but they eat Mah like crazy. I think if I use the HR gears so that I can gear for more torque, they will be perfect. I am just not willing to take a chance on them without more testing.

I will be running Holmes Torque Master motors at worlds.

I just can not get a steering set up the way I like it. This is really pissing me off. I am firing up solid works now, I will have something before I leave on Tuesday for Crawlapalosa (I even passed on bike ride to day because this is bugging me)

Plan
1-low CG servo mount- move upper link, horn facing back

2-make highsteer knuckles that work with 300CVDs

2-tie rod for over the top, likely delrin with brass sleeves

I will make these out of Delrin, I do not have any aluminum here right now

I am moving the Tie rod ends in by 2mm, to give the tire more room and making the arms a liyyle beefier. Th top king pins will also be a little different.

I have run out of time to make my own high clearence knuckles. I am lucky enough to have CKRC knuckles. They are 0.4mm widder then the Bergs, that should be fine for the CVDs.

The AX-10 knuckles put the CVDs 1.0 mm to the inside, therefore mis-alligning the kingpins and the cvd.

Looks good dude! I like that nothing goes under the axle tube. Will it work with a clocked front case? How close is the horn/servo to the motor?

Wanna make another one...I'm building one of those funny lookin rigs now...I might as well test out a funny looking steering setup too..lol ;)

Hey Jimmy;

This setup would not work with your driving style.
