View Full Version : My daughter and wife's truck - WIP

Here's the Wheely King I am currently working on slowly for my wife and oldest daughter (7) to drive. It's still got a long way to go before it hits any rocks. Since it's for girls I had to shoot it with nail polish pink paint and even pinker stickers. They like the paint...
next in line is new links, and the ckrc WK steering kit with a hitec 645 servo.
I am going to donate the stock rock lizards and wheels to this rig and get some new shoes for the ax-10...
Hehe... My daughter asked me tonight if I could dremel up one of her Barbie's to put in this one since I put a guy in the Helios/Warthog body on my AX....
Let me know what you think and if you have any tips for modding the WK...

The steering kit comes with a mount to move the servo to the axle, right? If not, you should do that too. Here is the basic outline I used to modify my WK - reversing the chassis and extending the links was a huge performance increase!

Here a pic of the body so far. My father in law and I are brazing up a roll cage for it, but will probably take a while to complete it. I have the electrics sealed up in radio shack project boxes and the servo plasti dipped... can't wait to get it running. There is a nice creek at 4th of July park in Kville.
For now wheels will be black RPM revolvers with axial Rock Lizards due to fundage.. But eventually I am going to get white wagon wheels from RC4WD and 1.9 rock crushers.

Stretched the WB out and mounted the RS project boxes which house the RX and ESC. Yes, they are on the back of the truck and this will be a trail rig not a comp rig so I am not as concerned with the weight there. Especially with the 6 cell 3300 nimh pack over the front end. I haven't completed the wiring yet either..
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii115/KvilleKrawler/Ax10/wheelyking016.jpg
In the end this chassis and tranny will be going the way of the garbage can in favor of a custom C channel chassis with an R2 tranny which will give much more room for the interior.

This is the body on the chassis minus interior or roll cage. Once the cage is in the wheel will go on the back along with a wild wheely jerry can.

I eventually want to take it down to 1.9 with a home grown chassis similar to the xtrail and some axles that will bring the tires in further. The WK axles are just way to wide, but it's what I got to work with at the moment.

Here's the start of the rear roll cage for the bronco. Gotta add the rest for the area around the tailgate and the inside of the fender wells.

This rear will tie into a cab portion and front hood portion as well. Doing it all in stages.. Then all will bolt on to a ladder frame... Working on the Front portion currently
I was talking about selling it as the wheely king framed truck... But now I want to keep it and make it into what I really want it to become... Progress will be slow but will post up pics as it progresses...

Got an X-trail frame for X-mas.... It's going to work perfectly for the Bronco.. And knowing the X-trail is a good performing chassis is even better. I got a Yotachump double triangulation skid plate for it as well.. I run that same skid on my comp ax-10...
My flux and Harris silver should arrive tomorrow so I will start getting the rest of the tubing done and knocked out..

I am going to modify the engine block and oil pan to reduce the height of the engine, and it will be mounted a little higher as well though it will not be sticking through the hood. This one is going to be a 2.2... and my JK will be a 1.9
I think I am gonna go with Losi Crawler shocks for this one too with internal springs..
Still gotta figure out battery placement on this though.. The electronics will be inside a water proofed fuel cell in the bed...

Just got confirmation that my winch has been shipped along with some rod ends.. Will start building the links with brakeline once that stuff gets here. Axles will soon be in place on this thing... I can hardly wait:excited:. I want to see what it looks like as a roller... I will have to use stock ax-10 shocks until I get my Losi 1/10 crawler and then my losi crawler shocks from my ax-10 will be transplanted to the bronco..
Nothing more done yet... I had a incident after painting it... I dropped it on the garage floor, no dents but the paint got messed up so I had to sand some spots and re spray it. Letting the paint fully cure until tomorrow and then will start some layers of clear on it...
Thank you for all the kind comments on it... here are some pics of how it may appear with axles under it.. Ride height will be more fine tuned with links and shocks. And no Rock Lizards will not be the final tire for this... I am thinking Losi rock carvers since they look like pit bulls.

Started working on the interior of it now... Have to cut out a stainless steel panel for the firewall and behind the seats. Make the upper dash pad, dash panel, steering wheel etc. Found something I will use for the center console too... I am debating if I should put SS door panels or just leave it open... Depends on if I have enough SS left after making the bed I guess. Got the lower front links done as well... Since this thing is going to weigh a ton I am going to use MIP drive shafts in it.

It's coming along very nice. How is the winch working out?
Thank you Rockshow. Just got the winch mounted. It won't work real well on this body though.. The bumper is only mounted to the body.. Once this body gets torn up some I will redo a new body and at that time make a bumper that is connected to the framework, I also want to make a functional hood on the next body or a removable front clip. I also have found some other changes I want to make to the tube work as well. I'm sure this truck will go through several revisions...
Here's the winch mounted and the aux lights relocated on the bumper. Outlined the doors and other lines on the body.
And a few pictures of the speaker box and Alpine amplifier. Once I learn how to make scale 4 ohm dual voice coils and butyl rubber surrounds I will try to make the subs look more realistic, but this is it for now :D.
I'm also going to make a cover out of sheet styrene to go over the spur gear so you wont see it.
I am debating between M2 and M3 flat irons for the tires. I am leaning towards M2 since this will be more of a Trail rig and not really be going up long step inclines. I am also thinking with the weight of this rig (10+ lbs) the soft M3's are going to look like way under inflated tires even sitting still unless I run really stiff foams..

I was having issues with loss of bind with the DX3R and my Bronco and comp rig at the March 22 CRR event at DPG. I took Silas's idea he told me about the other day at work and ran with it tonight. I wired the CC BEC straight to the servo. I then powered the RX from the ESC. Cut the looped wire on the spektrum 3100 binding plug and wired those to one of the switches in the center console of the bronco. Now if I ever need to bind the TX and RX, I just flip that switch hit bind on the TX and flip the switch back off. Gonna do the same thing on the comp rig.
I just wish I did it to the comp rig before getting the DNS on course 1...

Today day at Pilot Mtn NC.
I am very surprised at how well it handles.

Looks very nice, it seems like Pilot dried out pretty good.

Well, I decided to cut the roof off tonight. I like it way better, you can see more of the interior now and the MP3 player is louder too... :D

I think I will be transferring these wheels and tires to the FJ-40 build and making the Bronco a 1.9 with RC4WD Rok Lox which are only a little bit smaller diameter than the flat irons.
