Yea don't give me too many props just yet. I am just a cheap a** and did not want to buy a $100 delrin GC2 chassie. So I used a similar design on some 1/8" aluminum plate I had laying around at the house. I will tell ya this...I'll never do that again cause its way too time consuming.

As we are on the topic of being cheap.. I made the parts for my chassis "because I'm a machinist." Honestly, I didn't want to buy anything!:thumb: Excellent job though. I do commend you for making it yourself.

I thought it looked alot like my GC2. I thought it was cool that you gave it a shoot anyway. I bought the GC2 and trust me buying a chassis was the easy part. The rest is getting it all together and making it all work. That in itself was a chore. But I enjoyed every minute of it.

Let us know how the delrin links work out for ya. I have like 10' of delrin in the shop I can make linke out of. I'm interested in how much they flex if any under load. Some of the fellas I crawl with regulary were having trouble with the rear axles shifting with the bent links under load. I've not had this problem yet but it does exsist with the bent link setup.

Alright DIC ....I had to redo the 4 link mounts because the pinions were now lower than the bent links and would be the first contact point. And I bought some stickers after I got some measurements on the body. So I will be painting soon.

So I got to test it out yesterday and in my excitement I went through 2 batterys before I took any pictures or video.:bash: My stock electronics are amp whores and I can go though an 1800ma battery in 30min. It did extremely well for a cheap built crawler but I didnt have another crawler to test against.

Truggies: The bent delrin links worked great and had virtually no flex even when the tire was in a bind at full throttle (yay slipper clutch).

upnover: The revo shocks were an impulse buy on fleebay for under $20, so it was worth a shot. They are all aluminum and came with soft, med and hard springs with different valving options. I think they limit the break over angle a little because they are short (like 3") and dont let the axle droop alot when hung on the belly skid. I may get some 4" LOSIs after I can test next to another crawler. We shall see.

I should get the stickers I bought in the mail today and then I can paint the supersecret body....finally.

If your sorry butt would come in you could test it against three other rigs....:finger1: But seriously I think it looks good and you need to quit messing around and get you a ESC asap...I swear its the best thing I have done next to the NCRC stickers:p I cant wait to see how it does here @ the house on the "new" courses ...I will post up some pics tomm so you can see what we did:)

So here is the secret body pictures. My delima is the windows look crappy because the tape for the windows let paint under the sides. The windows stickers reacted to the paint and peeled. Also the silver paint on the sides came out more like primer and im still pissed about that. Plus it bled through the edges of the black....ahhhhhhhhh:bash:.

So my question is, should I paint the windows black or chrome (like the cap in pic2) or leave them clear?

If you paint the windows chrome the "bleed-thru" will still show. Probably more so than the way they are now. I think your best bet would be to go black or maybe try and use spray tint paint if it is dark enough.

Did you wash and/or scuff the inside of the body very well before you painted it?

j33pownr
06-23-2008, 01:19 PM
Yea I washed the inside before painting. I didnt scratch it up because I thought it would make the paint a dull looking color. What do I know im just a super-N00B. After it was clean I sprayed the black on first and let if dry for 12hrs. The problem was the silver could only be applied by paint brush. After the first few strokes along the dried black edge the silver paint ate through the black to what you can see in the photos. The black was a nice straight line along the body crease.

I was so mad after the paint screwed up but after a day to think about it I am beginning to think the black windows will be fine with the HITMAN theme because you should never see the driver in a HITMAN car anyway. I may just paint the sides black on the outside so when they get scratched they look primer/metal colored underneath.

What paints did you use?

One tip in doing this... Take Your Time!!! its way better to spray 5 light coats than 2 heavy...

One little thing I do is i take the body and heat it up a little before applying masks...

This makes the mask some what more plyable so to say... the heat also kind of activates the glue... but I don't mean to heat up the lexan till it melts... just warm enough that you notice its warm... hair drier works the best... or the low setting on the heat gun.

let it sit and cool. then lightly paint it. I suck at rattlecan painting, but loooove to airbrush. Got any questions, just ask!

Take some 00 steel wool and buff out the "bleeds" on your windows, then hit them with about 3 or 4 coats of black. The bleeds should go away. Also, if you use steel wool inside the body, once you spray it, the paint comes out nice a glossy, no hazyness or dullness until you scratch up the outside of the body. You really should scuff anypart you're going to paint. It makes the paint stick to the lexan MUCH better. Also, you have to use paint intended for lexan or it's not going to stay, it'll just flake off once it's dry completely.

I really like the Hitman theme, it's coming out nice so far.

Cajun
06-23-2008, 06:02 PM
One last thing, make sure you wash it thoroughly after the steel wool with dish soap and warm water to remove any wool bits or oily residue.

When I painted mine I used a scotch bright VERY LIGHTLY ...VERY the entire inside of the body then I washed it twice and let it dry. I actually put it in the oven on WARM for about 10 min before painting. I wasnt worried about bling bling because ..well its going to get scratched all to hell after one or two uses.

06-23-2008, 06:08 PM
Yea I got in a hurry but im pretty good with a spray can. I might as well get a toddler to paint by fingers when it comes to me painting with a brush.

The spray can is Kustom Kolor Black Pearl. The silver is Aero Gloss. I see now that its lacquer . I asked the lady at the hobby shop and she said they have people who use it on lexan bodies all the time. I guess they dont put them next to each other. Next time I will do some research and buy correct paints from a better hobby store...(cough) KC Hobby.

Silas
06-23-2008, 06:17 PM
I use latex or water base... but if you going to mix water base with lacquer... remember that lacquer goes on hot... chemicals are very active... and needs to be applied first. then apply any water base after the lacquer has had a good time to cure... like a min of 24 hours.

I get all my paint from Kirby or I will grab some at King when I am around that area. I stick with the FasKolors... and have no issues to date. It was a learning curve to use in an airbrush being a water base. FasKolors that he carries are all water color airbrush thinned paints.

WAY BETTER QUALITY VIDEOS THIS TIME

Here is my home made course in the center of the back yard. It was all sand to begin with and I cant grow grass there so I dont have to worry about weeds.:D

Here is the course....small but all I got ATM. It has 4 gates marked by little brick chipped corners. Its very tight which is why I left the body off to begin with.

So last night after a successful test run with the new rocks I came inside and left the batteries in the truck on.:bash: Apparently some time in the middle of the night when the batteries were dieing it spazzed out from some rogue frequency and ran off the 4ft tall table onto the garage floor and speed off into the garage door and CRASH, waking me up in the middle of the night.

When I went to check on the noise I eventually figured out what made the noise and to my surprise it somehow broke the front drive shaft yolk at the transmission.:( So now it out of comission untill I find someone who has some drive shafts in stock. Everyone is out of stock. Seems the government stimulus check ran everyone out of supplies. Sorry for the ranting and long run on sentences.

I'm a long way from a an RC vet, but thanks for the compliment. I just got into the building side of things rather quickly and I've always been mechanically inclined so this stuff is fairly easy. Most of my childhood was spent under the hood of some sort of hotrod, drag car, or motorcycle. I haven't been RCing even two years yet. :D I've only been crawling since the first of this year.... You're bug did come out nice though.

Let us know how you like the MIPs, I think that's going to be one of my next upgrades. I think that with a slipper should be the shaft set up to beat.

while putting the mips in I surmised that the next part to bit it will be the tranny outputs twisting/shearing off. Mine looked pretty worn and I dont think I am that hard on it.

Yeah, that and the tranny gears are why I think a slipper clutch will be handy with those bulletproof shafts.

I was hoping a steady trigger finger could act as a slipper. But when hemmed(sp)up, many seem to like to grab a handful of GO and cross our fingers. :monkeyeye: Might wanna consider that slipper, huh?

But like the man says "Those MIP's are Beefcake". I'd have to agree.
