Well fellas, I'm going to be the guinea pig on this one. I ordered one today from CKRC to test out. I run slippers on everything else, so I figured it couldn't hurt. I'm sure it'll take a little toying with the adjustment I'm sure, but it should theoretically take the weak point of the drivetrain from the tranny gears or the drive shaft and move it to the slipper. I have a bunch of changes ordered for my AX10 and this will be part of that upgrade session, so I'm hoping next time I see you guys, it'll be in and you can see it testing first hand. If it works the way I hope, I'll be looking at some Punisher shafts and metal tranny gears.

Sweet... keep us posted... I would like to know myself... something that gives before it breaks is always a plus!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. A planned slip should allow you to beef up the parts that give now, at least that's how it works on my fast movers.

yeah..well the same on the 1:1 world.... you want your weakest link to be something done on purpose, and/or is easily replaced... in this case, its done on purpose...
The only cons i can come up with are not so harsh lundges, or grabs when needing to punch!

I'm hoping that you can run it tight enough that the punch is still there and it will only slip in a bind. You can bet I'll test that, that's one of my favorite moves.

plus smoked one spur gear!

I found out that was how I stripped the spur on my AX10.. because I did it again a few days after replacing that one. I also noticed that the mesh was a bit loose, so moving them closer has helped.
I'm interested to see how this works out, if you can get a good adjustment on it, should be just the trick!

Ok, well after working over the slipper yesterday at High Rock Lake, I'm ready to render my opinon.
I got my new slipper from CKRC (http://www.ckrccrawlers.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=24_55&products_id=863) and proceded to install it last week along with a few other mods I did, mainly to the suspension. The install was straight foward and very simple. You replace the input shaft with the one supplied, then the slipper shoe (pad side) is pinned on the shaft. The spur side shoe gets bolted to the spur. Something interesting I noticed about the spur side shoe is the fact that it's made with a recess so the slipper pad is encased, so no dirt or small rocks can work their way into the pad. Other than that and the fact that the spring was very heavy, it works like any other slipper, the spur/shoe assembly is held against the pad shoe with a spring/washer/lock nut assembly. The instructions say tighten it down completely then back off 2 full turns. That's more than I've ever backed off a slipper, but I thought since the spring was so heavy it may work, so I set it according to the instructions and figured I could adjust it easily enough.
We got to HRL about 10:15am and it was raining, so I left my truck and radio in the car and watched the other guys slide around and cuss. The rain stopped about 30 minutes after we got there and the rocks began to dry some, so I went and got my stuff out of the car. I took off with my truck and actually forgot all about the slipper even being on there until something unusual happened. I noticed the truck was bound, the motor was turning and the wheels weren't. Well, I thought to myself, "great I stripped something in the tranny", but then remembered it was the slipper at work. So I tried it intentionally and could get the slipper to work each time the truck got bound. It really seems to work great. I broke things down last night some to clean my truck up and check for driveshaft twists and there aren't any. The truck performed on the rocks without a problem, I didn't even notice the slipper until I got bound, then it would kick in and save the shafts/tranny. IMHO, for $27 and shipping, it's a very good upgrade and should save wear and tear on the entire driveline.

It's certainly on my list of TTG.

hey
If you have a traxxas slipper already around, it will work if you just buy the top shaft of a nitro pede.
Both of the trannies in the bug yesterday had the slippers.
(I know I was braking shafts, I was testing stuff, I full steel shafts on there now)

Hey Tom, were you able to notice a difference in driveability from last weekend to this past weekend? You didnt have a slipper last weekend did ya? TCS has been sold out all week.

Good stuff. They have been pretty good at shipping the couple times I've ordered from them. Hope you will have it in for this weekend. It will be cool to see a couple different rigs/setups with the slipper in action.

Even back when I got my first RC10 20 years ago... :) I need to get another RC10 I think... B4 or B44 :)

You won't notice a thing till you bind it up and instead of twisting a shaft, the clutch slips.

That is the funny thing...
with both Cajun and Upnover 's rigs... I kind of cringed when I saw it just before kicking in, just knowing I would see a shaft twisted or ears plucked from the yoke!!..
but instead... just I slipper whining sound!! all is good... and they can keep competing...!!!
a must...
Rene mentioned an alternitive..... :) Traxxas parts to the resque!!

The main reason I did it was because I know that the Dig would come tomorrow inf I break down the Tranny just for this... :) have to do things twice!
I should have my lockers tomorrow!!

hey
I did not hear my slippers at the ECC at all, till I was done and was set on breaking something. Then they protected the driveline and I ended up breaking a lower link ballend.

I actually use my slipper for bashing and torque it down during comps. It has saved my driveline a couple times now. The one thing I notice with my slipper is when it starts slipping the bolt sometime backs off alittle too.

Are you saying that after the slipper becomes activated it sometimes changes the seting at witch it will activate the next time?
That would suck.

Yes my does, I am going to replace the lock nut. I think with all my tinkering I have worn it out.

I have ran it a couple times now...
and... well.. I am not 100% happy with it.
I have it torqued at spec settings, and it slips like crazy all the time.
I have upped my spur gear from an 85 to 93... so now I am running a 13/95. its a bit too much I think for the slipper. I am going to go to a 1/4 turn out from lock on it to see how it works tomorrow at DDS rock garden!

I noticed the same. With stock set up it's fine, but when I had the 35t and a
12/87 ratio got lots of slip. Since I have dialed it in its been a pretty good investment for me.

I dropped back from the 13/93 to a 14/93, and its a bit better... also torqued it a bit more too...

wow! fastest upgrade I have even had to do. Parts came in today, and even taking care of the 2 year old, I had it done in 10 minutes tops. Now I will have to just work on tweaking it, so it slips only at the right time.
Silas
04-21-2008, 03:05 PM
shouldn't slip all the time... just when bound up.
icepick
04-21-2008, 03:23 PM
Yeah, I did like the directions said. I then stepped on the wheels (rear) and set it so it lifts up the front a few inches before it slips. I will assume thats a good starting point.
Silas
04-21-2008, 03:24 PM
yeah... they said 2 turns out from full lock... Mine is maybe 3/4 turn from lock...
but I am a careful driver, and use a little less wheel speed, just because its not there.

Hey guys...you that have the slippers... do any of you notice that your battery really doesn't last as long with the slipper? I know that when it does get bound and the slipper kicks in, it is using more power, but I cut my run times down from 1 hour to 30 mins since I installed it.

no...it shouldn't effect your run time at all. It might be that you got some binding issues somewhere. Does everything turn freely? Your new servo draws more but other than that I can't think what my be draining your batts.

This has been going on before the servo... Everything spins nice and free... thought it could be the gears I was running, but I have changed that as well...with the same results. I dunno... I will see next week how long of runs I truely get :)
